The reasons why for a Planet Sun: (A wake up call)
- Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States: more than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually.
- More than 20 people die each day from skin cancer, primarily melanoma.
- More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure: a person's risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns.
The need for education and quality sun care products. The majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men over age 50: a mark of the "baby oil" generation (lack of proper sun care education, understanding and products.
The U.S. currently lags behind other countries in sun care education and understanding. Australia and Japan have effective government programs, national campaigns and lead in establishing industry standards for UV protection such as UPF and UVA rating systems
